The material library

Ask any laboratory to name the puck.

Most cannot, or will not. Below is every material we work in — the ceramics by manufacturer and product line, the metals and print resins by specification and standard, with the flexural strength the manufacturer publishes, the translucency figure, what it is genuinely good for, and where it is the wrong choice. Your case record carries the lot number of the exact blank yours was milled from.

Zirconia

Yttria content decides everything here. 3Y is strong and opaque, 5Y is translucent and comparatively weak, and 4Y is the compromise most single units want. Anyone who calls all of it 'zirconia' is hiding the only variable that matters.

Kuraray Noritake

KATANA Zirconia HT / ML

1100 MPa

flexural

3Y-TZP high-strength zirconia for posterior and long-span work.

Translucency
Lower translucency — strength-first
Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Posterior crowns
  • Long-span bridges
  • Bruxism cases
  • Minimal clearance

Where it is wrong

Too opaque for a single anterior unit next to natural enamel.

Kuraray Noritake

KATANA Zirconia STML

750 MPa

flexural

4Y multilayer zirconia — the workhorse balance of strength and translucency.

Translucency
38% light transmittance
Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Anterior and posterior crowns
  • Three-unit bridges
  • Implant crowns

Where it is wrong

Not indicated for spans beyond three units in heavy function.

Kuraray Noritake

KATANA Zirconia UTML

550 MPa

flexural

5Y ultra-translucent multilayer zirconia for aesthetic single units.

Translucency
43% light transmittance
Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Anterior single units
  • Veneers
  • Inlays and onlays

Where it is wrong

Single units only; the translucency is bought with strength.

Ivoclar

IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime

650–1200 MPa

flexural

A gradient disc that runs 3Y at the cervical and 5Y at the incisal within a single blank.

Translucency
Graduated across the blank
Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Single units through 14-unit bridges
  • Cases needing one material end to end

Where it is wrong

No general contraindication within its published indications. Prescribe it outside them and the case desk will say so before production starts.

Zirkonzahn

Prettau 2 / Prettau 4 Anterior

High-translucency monolithic zirconia developed for full-arch and full-mouth work.

Translucency
High, with a dispersive colour gradient
Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Full-arch fixed prostheses
  • Full-mouth rehabilitation
  • Implant bars

Where it is wrong

No general contraindication within its published indications. Prescribe it outside them and the case desk will say so before production starts.

Glass ceramic

Lithium disilicate remains the reference for a bonded anterior unit, and feldspathic layering remains the only way to get certain effects. Both depend on adhesive technique to reach their published numbers.

Ivoclar

IPS e.max CAD

530 MPa

flexural

Milled lithium disilicate — the reference standard for bonded anterior units.

Translucency
HT / LT / MO / HO ingots
Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Anterior crowns
  • Veneers
  • Inlays and onlays
  • Implant crowns on Ti-base

Where it is wrong

Requires adhesive cementation to reach its published strength.

Ivoclar

IPS e.max Press

470 MPa

flexural

Pressed lithium disilicate, for thin veneers and hand-characterised anteriors.

Translucency
HT / LT / MT / MO / HO ingots
Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Thin veneers
  • Anterior aesthetics
  • Cut-back and layer technique

Where it is wrong

No general contraindication within its published indications. Prescribe it outside them and the case desk will say so before production starts.

Ivoclar / VITA / Kuraray Noritake

Layering feldspathic ceramic

Hand-applied layering porcelain used over zirconia and metal substructures.

Standard
ISO 6872

Best for

  • Anterior characterisation
  • Refractory-die veneers
  • Cut-back cases

Where it is wrong

Layered ceramic remains the most chip-prone surface we make.

03 · 2 materials

Hybrid ceramic

Ceramic-polymer networks with an elasticity closer to enamel than to zirconia. Useful where the restoration should absorb a load rather than transmit it into an implant.

VITA Zahnfabrik

VITA ENAMIC

A dual-network hybrid of ceramic and polymer, with enamel-like elasticity.

Standard
ISO 6872 / ISO 10477

Best for

  • Inlays and onlays
  • Implant-supported single crowns
  • Shock absorption

Where it is wrong

No general contraindication within its published indications. Prescribe it outside them and the case desk will say so before production starts.

GC

GC CERASMART

Force-absorbing nano-ceramic that can be repaired intraorally with composite.

Standard
ISO 10477

Best for

  • Onlays
  • Implant crowns
  • Patients with parafunction

Where it is wrong

No general contraindication within its published indications. Prescribe it outside them and the case desk will say so before production starts.

04 · 1 material

Polymer

Milled provisional material. It is here to hold a geometry for weeks, not years, and we will say so if it is prescribed as anything else.

Multiple validated suppliers

PMMA

Milled provisionals, prototypes and long-term temporaries.

Standard
ISO 20795-1

Best for

  • Provisionals
  • Full-arch prototypes
  • Trial smiles

Where it is wrong

Provisional only — not a definitive restorative material.

05 · 4 materials

Denture

Heat-cure, injection and monolithic milled bases. The bonded-disc materials remove the base-to-tooth bond line, which is where conventional dentures usually fail first.

Dentsply Sirona

Standard
ISO 20795-1

Best for

  • Complete dentures
  • Partial bases

IvoBase

High-impact injection denture base with controlled shrinkage compensation.

Standard
ISO 20795-1

Best for

  • Digital complete dentures
  • Reproducible re-manufacture

Where it is wrong

No general contraindication within its published indications. Prescribe it outside them and the case desk will say so before production starts.

Valplast / DuraFlex class

Thermoplastic nylon partial

Metal-free flexible partial framework material.

Best for

  • Aesthetic anterior clasping
  • Undercut-heavy arches

Where it is wrong

Cannot be relined conventionally and resists chairside adjustment.

Where it is wrong

No general contraindication within its published indications. Prescribe it outside them and the case desk will say so before production starts.

Shade reference

Three shade systems, one stump scale.

The prescription form accepts any of these. Written codes only — no photographs of shade tabs, because a shade tab reproduced on a screen is worse than no reference at all. Send a calibrated photograph with the tab in frame and we will read it against the physical guide.

Stump shades — IPS Natural Die Material

9 steps

For anything translucent — lithium disilicate, 5Y zirconia, veneers — the preparation shade decides the result as much as the ceramic does. A stump shade is not optional on those cases, and the prescription form will ask for one.

Publishing the limitation

A 5Y zirconia that transmits 43% of light is a beautiful anterior crown and a poor three-unit bridge.

You should hear that from your laboratory rather than from the remake. If a prescription and a material do not agree, we raise it in the review step — with the tooth, the span and the reason named.
